Mine Tailings
Mine Tailings are the waste rock that is generated during the mining process. This material contains cyanide which must be contained until the material can be reclaimed.

It is critical that when the liquid containing the precious metals is captured, there cannot be any leaks. Often times these ponds are double-lined with a leak detection zone to insure no contamination or loss of metal occurs.
Heap Leach Pads are used in the mining process to extract precious metals from ore. During the process, crushed rock is stacked on a lined area then cyanide is sprinkled onto the rock to dissolve the precious metals. The lining is used not only to contain the liquid metals but also to capture the cyanide so it can be recycled.
